Latte Vs flat white explained
One of the most common questions we get asked in our coffee shop is, “What’s the difference between a latte and a flat white?” While both are milk-based drinks made with a double shot of espresso, the key difference comes down to the ratio of milk to coffee.
A flat white is typically served as an 8oz drink. Because it’s smaller, there’s less milk relative to the espresso, which results in a stronger coffee flavour. It’s often the go-to choice for those who want a more pronounced espresso taste — especially as a morning pick-me-up.
A latte, on the other hand, is generally served as a 12oz drink. The higher milk content makes it a longer, creamier drink, with a softer coffee flavour. This makes lattes a popular choice for sitting in, catching up, and enjoying a more relaxed coffee experience.
Over time, larger coffee chains have blurred the lines between the two. In many cases, a large flat white can end up being very similar to a small latte if both are served with a double shot of espresso. At that point, the difference becomes more about naming than the drink itself.
Coffee should be simple and enjoyable, not confusing. Whether you’re team flat white or team latte, there’s no right or wrong choice — just what you enjoy most. If you’re in the shop and not sure what to order, have a chat with us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
